The first road that connected the valleys with the plain were constructed only in the first twenty years of the 1900’s. This isolation has allowed to conserve nearly unchanged the naturalistic, ethnographic and cultural patrimony. The various towns have different architectonic styles, even though only of few kilometres apart, and the same can be said of the dialects. Among the ancient trades there is the sedoners, wooden spoon carvers and other domestic tools, coalmen, that produced the coal for Venice, the fabricaition of the mugolio, distilling the mugo pine, and the cultivation of tobacco.
Cimolais is found in the heart of the Dolomiti Friulane Park. It is a small town whose origins go back to the age of ancient Rome. It is an ideal point of departure for excursions in the territory, among which there is the legendary peak of the Campanile di Val Montanaia, sumbol of the Friuli mountains and candidate for the nomination of humanity patrimony.
Culinary characteristic od Cimolais and the surrounding valleys are pestith made up of fermented turnips, petuccia (packed minced meat and deliciously spiced), wild game packed meats, cheese of various types, puina (fresh smoked ricotta cheese), fresh butter, beans and potatoes.
